ONE YEAR LATER
AMARA
I run my hands down the smooth fabric of my red pencil dress while Fionn’s out with the kids so I can get ready in peace for our weekend getaway.
I’m almost done as I add a few finishing touches to the small amount of makeup I put on. Some blush here, some mascara there. I’m happy to report I’m still terrible at putting on makeup, but I’m a bit better than I was.
I wanted to look nice for tonight, though.
Since our son, Ezra, was born almost seven months ago, Fionn and I haven’t had much time for ourselves. So when he surprised me with tickets to a Broadway show later tonight in New York City, then said we’d be staying the weekend, I was excited, yet nervous about leaving the kids.
I know we’ll have a great time and they’ll be safe with Tynan and Elara, but I just can’t help myself. Though I know this getaway will be good for us. I haven’t so much as put on a dress since before the baby, and I’ve missed dressing up.
And sleeping. I’ve really missed sleeping.
Yet I wouldn’t give this up for anything. Life with Fionn has been everything I always wanted it to be. He’s been nothing short of an amazing dad to our baby. Watching him holding our son has got to be my favorite thing.
But are we ready for more?
My body buzzes with nerves, my hands balling at my sides. Releasing a heavy sigh, I return to our master bathroom, where the pregnancy test has been sitting for the past three minutes.
I had a feeling I could be pregnant when my breasts started to hurt as he touched them yesterday, but I didn’t know for sure. Fionn has talked about having more kids after Ezra is one, so this may be too soon even for him.
What if we can’t handle a toddler and a newborn? At least Fia is easy. She’s been a little mommy to her brother. The idea of another child excites me, though. I want our family to grow.
Okay, I need to get this over with and just look at that test.
Taking small steps, I head inside the bathroom, nearing the sink. A part of me will be disappointed if all this achiness was for nothing.
A twinge of sadness hits at the thought of that test being negative, but I’ll cross that bridge if it comes.
Another step closer, and I stare down at it, gasping as the word pregnant stares at me.
Oh my God, it’s really happening.
I need to tell Fionn. Maybe I can do something cute at our date tonight. My heart’s beating a mile a minute as I pick up the test, needing to hide it before—
“Mommy!” Fia rushes into the bathroom, straight for me.
Fionn follows with a sleeping Ezra across his chest.
“Um, hey, guys. You’re back early.” I try to hide the test behind my back.
“Sorry, baby. Fia missed you.” He glances at me suspiciously, while Fia rounds her arms around my hips looking up at me. “What’s in your hand?”
He stalks closer, brows furrowing.
“Uh, well…” I bite the edge of my lip. “This is definitely not how I planned to tell you…”
“Amara?” His voice drops, chest rising up and down with his intense breaths. “Please tell me that’s what I think it is.”
My nervous grin spreads. “I really wanted it to be a cute surprise tonight. I was even about to look up cute ways to tell your husband you’re pregnant at dinner, but…surprise!” I grimace.
He sucks in a breath, erasing the rest of the distance between us. “We’re having another baby?”
He clasps the back of my head, his eyes sinking into mine, every inch of his face dripping with heavy, untethered emotion—so much of it, tears gather in my eyes.
“Yes.” I nod. “We are.”
“I’m so damn happy right now.” He kisses my forehead, holding Ezra tighter.
“I’m having another brother or sister?” Fia’s mouth pops wide.
“That’s right, princess,” he says, dropping his mouth across my ear. “Hopefully, Daddy can knock Mommy up as many times as possible.”
My skin heats up at his husky tone, my hand sliding across his strong back. “I think we can arrange that, Daddy.”
He groans, lips skimming down my throat and making my pulse quicken. “I can’t wait until you’re turned on every second of every day like you were the last time.”
“There are children present,” I scold, my nails sinking into his back, loving the feeling of his hard, masculine flesh.
“Thankfully, there will be none on the plane, because I plan to do all kinds of unholy things to you.”
I scratch the side of my throat. “Maybe we should hurry and drop the kids off at your brother’s, then, so we can get on the road.”
“My, my, Mrs. Quinn. Aren’t you a dirty little thing?” His lips stroke across mine, my nipples pebbling in their wake.
“Mommy isn’t dirty!” Fia scoffs, still clinging to my hips.
He chuckles, looking down at our always outspoken daughter. “You’re absolutely right, sweetheart. Now, how about you go get your luggage from your room and come back so we can head to Uncle Tynan’s?”
“Yay! I can’t wait for my sleepover with Adora!”
She rushes off to grab it while Fionn gets the baby’s bag. Looking at his tiny little face makes me sad to leave him, but I know we need this.
“He’s gonna be fine,” Fionn says as he swings the bag over his shoulder.
“I know, it’s just…look at him.” I pout.
He glances at his shoulder, Ezra’s butt sticking out as he lies peacefully on his father. “Our son is beautiful.”
“He is.” My heart just about bursts.
“I’m ready!” Fia returns with her small Minnie Mouse luggage.
“Let me get it,” I tell her. “So I can bring it down the stairs for you.”
“Okay, Mommy.”
She grabs my hand, while Fionn leads the way to the foyer, locking the door behind us before strapping both kids into their seats.
He places everything in the trunk while I settle into my seat, and once he’s in, we start on our way toward Tynan’s. I quickly send a text to Elara, telling her we’ll be there soon.
As soon as we arrive a few minutes later, they’re both at the front to greet us.
“Hey, guys!” Elara glances at Fia through the open window. “Adora is so excited to spend the weekend with you!”
“Me too!” Fia grins.
Tynan helps Fionn with Fia’s luggage and the portable bassinet he put in the car before he took the kids, while I take Fia out of her seat.
She rushes to give Elara a hug, and I grab Ezra, unstrapping him as he gives me a big smile. I die for those baby smiles.
“Mommy’s gonna miss you.” My mouth lowers to his cheek. “And Mommy’s gonna miss you too, baby girl.” I give my girl a big kiss on her head.
“I’m gonna miss you and Daddy too, Mommy.” She squeezes me tight.
“You’re gonna have so much fun, though!” I clasp her cheek in my palm.
“We sure are,” Elara says.
Once Tynan has brought all our things inside, Elara takes Ezra from me. “He’s so precious. I miss this age.”
Fionn grabs my hand and squeezes. He knows how hard this is for me. It’s like leaving my heart with other people, but I know they’re safe.
“Okay, you be a good girl for your aunt and uncle,” I tell Fia. “And help them with your brother like you always do.”
“Okay, Mommy. I hope you and the baby have fun on your trip!”
Elara and Tynan both stare at us in confusion.
Crap. We probably should’ve told her not to say anything.
“Wait, what baby?” Elara narrows her eyes, glancing at my stomach.
“Uh, well…”
Fionn cups my belly, tugging me to his side with his other arm. “We’re having another one. We just found out.”
“Oh my God!” Elara hugs me, while Tynan clasps Fionn across his shoulder.
“Congrats, you guys,” he tells us.
“Thank you.” Fionn tightens his arm around me. “Now, if you need us, don’t. I plan to spend all day tomorrow in bed with—”
I elbow him, shaking my head, while Tynan smirks. “Please call us if there’s a problem. We’ll rush right home.”
“We’ll be just fine.” Elara smiles. “You two have a wonderful time.”
As we head back to our car, waving to our daughter, I realize how lucky I am. Not only to have Fionn and my children, but to have his family too. The Quinns have accepted me as one of their own, and between them and having my parents, I know I’m right where I belong.
And as our family grows, I know we’ll always be there for one another. Because in the end, that’s what family’s all about.
